I like switching teams/organizations every 1-1.5 years. I'm more of a builder than a maintainer, so regularly switching keeps things interesting to me. But I don’t want everything I’ve built to fall apart the moment I walk out the door. In my most recent switch, I found myself using the surprisingly useful metric: If I leave today, how long until things turn to 💩?

How long until test automation breaks down? Until team dynamics unravel? How long until that change I championed is forgotten? How long is long enough for me to leave without worrying?

In this talk, I’ll introduce this metric and talk about some practical ways you can extend the time-to-first-💩 and time-to-total-💩. How can you build automation, processes, and team culture that last after you're gone?
