Being a senior specialist you might feel like management is the only career move available to you. We want to show you both why it could be a great fit, and that it's ok to not want it.
Room F1+F2+F3 - Plenary
Not limited to any role
If you have been working in the industry for a while, especially taking on more leadership/strategic tasks, chances are you've been pushed, urged or suggested to step into management. Maybe you've heard there's no place for you to progress unless into management. We for sure know we were. For now, the choices we've made have been the opposite of each other's.
Can you make an impact, truly move an organisation, without formal mandate through management? Is the added responsibility worth the hype? Can't you just stay where you are? Sure you can.
Isn't management just meetings, boring budget processes and bad one-on-ones? It doesn't have to be. Those strict budget processes and hard conversations can actually be fun, if you apply your powers of curiosity and seeing the bigger picture.
We'll dive into fears, wants and challenges and look deep into WHY we made the changes we made (so far), and the expected and unexpected things we've learned about ourselves, building software and how the world works.
Grab some popcorn and prepare for stories about wins, losses and unexpected learnings. Maybe you leave with a new found urge to become a manager. Maybe you leave convinced that is not for you. Hopefully you leave with a better understanding of what it could entail, and what other paths you have to choose from.
