Build an Agile Line-Follower Robot

Bonus Session

Learn agility by doing: kids will learn about hardware, collaborate in roles, build a robot, test it, and improve their strategy with fast feedback. Then race for fun!

Key-Learnings

  • Experience agile teamwork building a robot
  • Practice quality thinking

A guided, workshop where kids, organized in teams, build a line-following robot, work in agile roles, and finish by racing on a track they create.

ATTENTION: THIS IS A KIDS WORKSHOP. YOU CANNOT BOOK OR ATTEND - the version for adults "Agile on wheels: The line follower robot race" will be available on Wednesday, Conf Day 2 at 8 pm.

In this hands-on workshop we are going to form small teams and build a robot that can follow a line on the floor. We start with a simple, guided explanation of how the robot works (motors, sensors, “brain/software”, power) and how the code turns sensor readings into movement. Then we introduce agility in friendly terms: “work in small steps, test often, learn fast.”

After that, we will assign teams easy roles (Planner, Builders and Testers) and run a sprint to build the robot to move and react to the line. Testing is part of the game: quick sensor and motor checks, a tiny regression loop (“pit-stop test”), and short exploratory runs to discover surprises on different track shapes.
Finally, we play with the robots on multiple circuits, and if time allows the group tapes a larger circuit together for a friendly race. We close with a short retro so kids can share what helped their team collaborate, learn, and build quality into their robot.
