Unveiling the Environmental Consequences of Storing Data on the Cloud: A Call to Action for a Sustainable Future.
Room F1 - Track 1: Talks
Anyone who is interested in lowering their environmental impact
Our common digital behaviour has resulted in a surge of data collection, storage, and transmission that is putting an alarming strain on the energy resources and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Data centers are currently responsible for 2% of global CO2 emissions, which is equivalent to the aviation industry. This figure is expected to rise to 3.2% in 2025 and could reach up to 14% by 2040. This trend is unsustainable and requires immediate action from all stakeholders.
This talk proposes practical solutions such as deleting unnecessary data, reducing e-waste, and promoting circular economy models, and calls for the industry to adopt more sustainable practices such as renewable energy sources and energy-efficient technologies. I invite participants to join the discourse and take concrete steps towards a more sustainable future. Digital hoarding is like having an overflowing virtual closet, filled with files and data that may or may not spark joy. While it can be overwhelming, it's never too late to tidy up and declutter for a more streamlined and sustainable digital life.
